قالsaid حبيmy beloved علامwhy تهجرُyou shun طرفيmy gaze
قال حبي علام تهجرُ طرفي
وترىand you look at مبسميmy smiling mouth فرحتso I began أقولُto say
وترى مبسمي فرحت أقولُ
My beloved said, “Why do you shun my gaze
And look at my smiling mouth?” So I began to say:
ماnot الذيthat which عندهat it تدارُare passed around المناياdeaths
ما الذي عنده تدارُ المنايا
كالذيlike that which عندهat it تدارَis passed around الشمولُwine
كالذي عنده تدارَ الشمولُ
“Where death is passed around
Is not like where wine is passed around.”
