انظر إلى الدرج في يمنى يديه وقس

كم بين ذاك وبين الروضة الأنف

Look at the scroll in his right hand, and gauge

How great the difference is between that and the fresh, ungrazed meadow.

إن قلت في الروض ورقٌ فوق قضب نقا

أقل وكم هزةٍ في ذا على ألف

If you say, 'In the meadow are doves above branches on a sand dune,'

I say, 'And how many a quiver is here upon an alif!'

واسمع جواهر ألفاظٍ يفوه بها

وخل للناس درٍّ كان في الصدف

And hear the jewels of the words he utters,

And leave to others the pearls that lay in shells.

إذا أشار براي في المهم فهل

رأيت كيف وقوعُ السهم في الهدف

When he offers counsel on a weighty matter, have you

Seen how the arrow strikes the target?
