لا تنكروا من أدمعي صفرةً

لا تنكروا من أدمعي صفرةً

يبصرها الناظرُ عند الهموع

يبصرها الناظرُ عند الهموع

Do not find strange a yellow tint in my tears,

Do not deny the yellowness of my tears

Which the onlooker sees as they stream.

That the onlooker sees when I weep

وإنما تجري على ناحلٍ

وإنما تجري على ناحلٍ

فاللون للوجنةِ لا للدموع

فاللون للوجنةِ لا للدموع

And they merely flow over one wasted away;

For they flow down an emaciated cheek

For the color belongs to the cheek, not to the tears.

So the color comes from the cheek, not the tears
