وقالواand they said الحبابthe froth حكىresembled ثغرهhis mouth
وقالوا الحباب حكى ثغره
فقلتso I said لقدindeed زادwent too far فيin إفكهits falsehood
فقلت لقد زاد في إفكه
And they said, “The froth resembled his mouth.”
They said the beloved's mouth told tales,
So I said, “It has indeed gone too far in its falsehood:
So I said he has increased his lies,
فإنfor indeed الأقاحيthe daisies ذوتwithered عندهbeside it
فإن الأقاحي ذوت عنده
وماand not انخرطwere strung الدرthe pearls فيin سلكهits thread
وما انخرط الدر في سلكه
For the daisies have withered beside it,
For red roses withered in his presence,
And pearls have not been strung upon its thread.”
And pearls did not string on his thread.
