صوارمٌ سميت للناس أجفانا
And a supple youth—from his glances I was slain
His glances struck me like drawn swords,
By keen swords known to people as eyelids.
that people call 'eyelashes'.

فعاد فودى من ذهل بن شيبانا
He hurled affliction at my heart and bewildered me;
He shot my heart with tribulation and left me dazed.
So my temple joined Dhuhl ibn Shayban's clan—bewildered and gray.
My senses returned like the camel of Dhuhl son of Shayban.

فصاح فيه الكرى يا آل نبهانا
And he slept, heedless of my distracted eyelid, leaving it sleepless;
Sleep weighed down my heedless eyes,
So slumber cried out within it: “O clan of Nabhan!”
but anguish cried out, 'O people of Nabhan!'
