وصاحبand a friend لماwhen أتاهcame to him الغنىwealth
وصاحب لما أتاه الغنى
تاهgrew haughty ونفسand the soul المرءof a man طماحهever ambitious
تاه ونفس المرء طماحه
And a friend, when wealth came to him,
grew haughty—and a man's soul is ever ambitious.
وقيلand it was asked هلquestion marker أبصرتyou saw منهfrom him يداًa hand; a favor
وقيل هل أبصرت منه يداً
تشكرهاyou thank it قلتI said ولاnor even راحهa palm; also, rest
تشكرها قلت ولا راحه
And I was asked, 'Have you seen him offer a hand
deserving thanks?' I said, 'Not even a palm.'
