قد ضل في خبر الأهرام عقل فتىً
أرادhe sought تحقيقهto verify it فيin سالفbygone الحقبages
أراد تحقيقه في سالف الحقب
A young man's mind has indeed gone astray in the tale of the pyramids,
The mind of a young man went astray
As he sought to verify it in ages long past.
In the tales of pyramids from days gone by
وليسand does not يعلمُknow منهاof them غيرother than أبنيةٍbuildings
وليس يعلمُ منها غير أبنيةٍ
شابتturned gray نواصيthe forelocks of اللياليthe nights وهيwhile they لمdid not تشبturn gray
شابت نواصي الليالي وهي لم تشب
And all he knows of them is that they are buildings:
Yet he knows of them naught but buildings
The nights' forelocks have turned gray, while they have not.
Whose locks the nights have whitened though not aged
