يقودُ فاسمع مقالة الظرفا
A poet is not on a par with a young man
The composer of poetry is not like a young man
Who acts as a procurer—so hear the wits' saying:
Who leads, so listen to the words of chance
ألفhe assembled هذاthis one حروفهhis letters وسمتand rose high
ألف هذا حروفه وسمت
همةthe ambition of هذاthis one فألفاso he brought together الحرفاthe clients
همة هذا فألفا الحرفا
This one assembled his letters, while higher rose
This one composed its letters and gave it character
The other's ambition, so he brought the clients together.
That one gave it ambition, so the letters came together
