أذابَ الضنى جسمي سلمت من الردى
وروعنيand terrified me يومthe day الفراقof parting رعاكِmay God protect you
وروعني يوم الفراق رعاكِ
Wasting sickness has melted my body—may you be safe from death.
Melancholy melted my body, I was spared ruin
And the day of parting terrified me—may God protect you.
And parting day startled me, may it startle you
وكمand how many أودعَlodged التوديعُfarewell والصبرُwhile patience نازحٌfar away
وكم أودعَ التوديعُ والصبرُ نازحٌ
فوادحgrievous calamities شاكٍof one lamenting فيin الفؤادthe heart حشاكِmay you be spared
فوادح شاكٍ في الفؤاد حشاكِ
And farewell, while patience is far away, has lodged so many
How much farewell did bidding farewell contain, and patience migrating
grievous woes of a sufferer in the heart—may you be spared!
