قلت لصحب زارهم شادنٌ

قلت لصحب زارهم شادنٌ

كأنه الغصن إذا ماسا

كأنه الغصن إذا ماسا

I said to companions whom a young gazelle had visited,

I asked friends who visited them at dawn

Like a bough when he swayed:

As though he were a branch swaying

هل طاف بالكأس فقالوا نعم

هل طاف بالكأس فقالوا نعم

وكاس لما شرب الكاسا

وكاس لما شرب الكاسا

“Did he go round with the cup?” They said, “Yes,

Did he pass the cup around and they said yes

And he staggered when he drank the cup.”

Yet no cup when he who sipped has sipped
