Must a reproach from you distress me every day,

like a boulder hurled down from on high by the torrent?

And endlessly, falsely accusing me, you shoot

your two arrows into the ten parts of a mortally wounded heart.

So evening finds me in a night whose wing of darkness stretches

over me with every kind of sorrow, to put me to the test.

And at dawn my heart, from anguish's blaze, seems

to boil like a cauldron when its heat surges within.

Its splinters fly within my breast, as though

at its farthest edges lay uprooted squill bulbs [text unclear].

And my tears flowed from my cares and burning grief

over my upper chest, until my tears soaked my sword-baldric.

When my companions see the burning anguish within me,

they say, 'Do not perish from grief; bear it with dignity.

Be gentle, and do not despair over lost fidelity,

for lamenting an effaced trace brings no solace.'

And I bear you an enduring love, which I have thus bound

with flaxen cords to solid rocks.

And I have thoughts of you, through which my breast

is given a morning draught of pure, pepper-spiced first-run wine.

As though their hopes were goblets of aged wine

tomorrow, while fresh water remains untouched [wording unclear].

I have put aside the follies of youth and youthful passion,

yet my heart has not slipped free of its love for them.

    And I unveil the face of love in you to its people;

whenever the eye climbs over you, it descends to level ground.

So return and charge the army of betrayal

on a sleek, massive steed, a fetter for wild beasts.

You will find, from me, bashful human maidens with budding breasts,

their upper chests polished like a mirror.

    And leave estrangement behind, and return to fidelity's old abode;

and if you have resolved to sever ties with me, do it graciously.
