تَسَمَّيتُ لَمّا إِشتَدَّتِ الحَربُ زَينَبا
Ah, has word reached the young men of my people that I
Has the news reached the youth of my people that I
took the name Zaynab when the war grew fierce,
Have donned the name Zainab when war grew intense,
وَأَدنَيتُand I drew close جِلبابيmy cloak عَلىover نَيتِunclear; likely 'growth of' لَحبَتيunclear; likely 'my beard'
وَأَدنَيتُ جِلبابي عَلى نَيتِ لَحبَتي
وَأَبدَيتُand I showed لِلقَومِto the people البَنانِthe fingertips المُخَضَّباdyed
وَأَبدَيتُ لِلقَومِ البَنانِ المُخَضَّبا
and drew my cloak over [the growth of my beard; wording uncertain],
And have tucked up my skirts upon a solemn resolve
and showed the people my dyed fingertips?
To smite with my spear strongly, devoid of all sense?
