Was it from yearning and remembrance of loved ones that I wept?
From passion have I wept and memory of friends
And yearning allotted to you has its reminders.
Yet for fate's passions yours would be recall

And the tribe's dwelling, unrecognizable and deserted.

And male ostriches whose calls ring out there.

Their speech was mute markings and lines.

My mournful mood and grieving to console"

Worn down by journeying and travel.

They said, 'There is no caravan at al-Anha.'
"No halt" they said "the goal cannot console"

A crushing bite for their foes, and disdain.
Disdain and scorn for any hostile soul

لهfor him منهfrom it العرارةُthe choicest portion والخيارُand the best
Camels, each driving off plunder,
With grace we conquered nations in this world
With its choicest and best share for himself.
And hope hereafter grace shall us rejoin

فَسِدناهمso we became their lords واثعلتand multiplied [unclear form] المضارُthe Mudar clans
Thus the sons of Nizar rose through good fortune;
After God's judgement, Ishmael decides
We became their lords, and the Mudar clans multiplied.
Our rights, when fear and discord are purloined
فكانso there was لناfor us وللمضرينand for the Mudaris حظٌّa share
وللحُسّادِand for the envious فيin الأثَرِthe wake الغبارُdust
There was a share for us and for the Mudaris,
My judgement upon ignoramuses spurned
And for the envious, dust in our wake.
Lights wisdom's path no doubts can undermine

واعلامٌand standards قدامِسَةٌmighty كبارُlarge
Glory and ample power became ours,
Of Ma'add's party, Quda'a followed suit
And mighty, towering standards.
Lesser than Tubba's realm in its turmoil
ومناand from us الأنبياءُthe prophets وكُلٌّand every مَلكٍking
وحُكّامُand the rulers of الائمةِthe leaders حيثُwherever صارواthey went
From us came the prophets and every king,
They cast off refuse of Ma'add's tribes
And the rulers of the leaders, wherever they went.
Misfortune favouring those they would despoil

We surpassed others in this world through excellence,
Qahtan's tribes you shun in your remote and gloom
And hope that the place of return will be ours.
No triumph can you gain through this turmoil

Ishmael, after God, judges
Whoever makes you sole guest will find
For us in truth, when the stakes were raised.
Betrayal spreading from your wings in coil

I possess the decisive answer for the ignorant among you,
To aid your distant kin brings ruin, whilst
Like a clear road marked with beacons.
Your cousin's inmost parts you dig and broil

Quda'a was a faction of Ma'add;
No olive turns to date palm when the winds
You become followers, and followers bear humiliation.
Of Syria breathe, confusing the turmoil

They find a copious gush of milk from Ma'add;
No chickpeas change to raisins 'neath the heat
A scant stream flows for whoever shares with it.
When from the cropper's store brought forth to boil

You will know remoteness from the sons of Qahtan,
Nor will I suffer that my brother bow
And be wronged, with no power to avenge yourself.
To Yemen, whilst disgrace strikes Nizar's soil

Whoever is a stranger on the day he calls for help,
The prey escape from Nizar and its chiefs
The breaking of his two wings betrays him.
Whose claws leave naught but bones for them to spoil

Help from distant kinsmen comes slowly to you,
When the north winds blow wildly in the night
While your cousin's very heart is stirred to alarm.
Troubles and darkness come our lives to foil

Whoever uproots his stock for another,
Each day we learned to face undaunted, whilst
That is a mutilation of firmly rooted lineage.
Others learned fear, distrustful in their turmoil

Just as the olive cannot be classed as a palm,
A man's promise held when spare time allows
Nor can deserts change a lofty palm tree,
No wells exist for it to flow and coil

Nor the dates enclosed in their sheaths around Hims,
Commander of the Faithful, you are guidance, light
When harvest time comes in Hajar.
Dispelling darkness, changing night to day uncoiled

I disdain that my brother should be a follower
You scolded Bani Ummaya from Quraysh
Among Yemen's people, with Nizar subdued.
Refined elite whose glow the righteous tendered loyal

The proud men among my forebears of Nizar refuse it,
Abdulmalik brought the poor relief and strength
And gifts whose udders yield abundantly.
A refuge whose assault cannot be foiled

When the Syrian wind begins to moan,
The caliphate he then assumed from hands
And whirlwinds play with it through the night,
Of Marwan's son, solid as mountains' stony coil

Our banquets are open to all each day,
I said to Thul Kala and Thul Ra'n
While some people invite only a chosen few.
"Does talk of asses or of bulls our thoughts beguile?"

A man's words travel, after a while,
After long centuries Quda'a pretends
To places no wells lie near.
In shifting time none can their tricks foil

The Commander of the Faithful is guidance and light,
Bunjala's son Namara spoke in verse
As daylight clears the gloom of darkness.
But when the reckoning comes has no turmoil

The foremost of the sons of Umayya, of Quraysh:
When will you ride in fright of piebalds
They are refined, choice stock and pure gold.
As slander's market for your lies is freshly oiled?

'Abd al-Malik is sustenance for the poor,
Our refuge is the sword when we draw near
And a refuge whose fortress cannot be harmed.
And sparks of kindling strike the fuel bringing boil

He bore the caliphate; then rest came
Our blows are such the blind can see their flash
To it with the son of Marwan.
Whilst sighted ones see nothing through night's murky broil

I said to Dhu al-Kala' and Dhu Ru'ayn,
You know that Isaac, he's our brother, brings
'Is Himyar's claim true, or is it injustice?'
The winds of blessing in his seasons' gentle toil

Quda'a claims them after a long age;
We shake Al-Musharrafiyah then spring forth
In time there are reversals and changes.
No lame deer we, escaping from the trial

Anmar son of Bajila uttered a saying,
And when they count, he has no evasion.

Whenever you reach, trembling, for the bridles one day,
A market of spear-thrusts rises, with traders in it.

With blows by which the blind can see,
Yet before which keen eyes are dazzled.

Our lineage bears his ancestral marks.

We brandish Mashrafi swords, then charge,
And never turn away from an assailant.
