I am indeed offering a poem of praise and a gift

to Asmāʾ, the mighty lord of immense bounty.

No one who speaks well and praises the bounty

of Badr ibn Maʿadd’s house ever regrets it.

Your grandfather Ḥiṣn built for you in the heights of glory,

as Nuʿmān once built for the ʿAlāqim.

Bright-browed when foreheads clash, he is like

a crescent appearing through the clouds’ veiling folds.

When we visit his house, he says, 'Welcome!

Come in!' Then he confronts us with no rancor.

Have you not seen that we have clothed you in a robe

that has exalted you, no garb for base and ugly men?

Mufaddāh, daughter of al-Ḥiṣn, is your mother; so trace your descent

to that exalted lineage with its lofty pillars.

And never forget the mother of Badr’s sons,

nor Badr, father of those magnanimous stars.

The chieftains of the tribe of Qays keep visiting him,

    and Taghlib’s too—some yielding nose-reins, others complying.

By my life, Badr’s son has indeed become lord through his merit,

over a loving friend pleased at this and one forced to submit.

And he entrusted the people’s affairs, after their confusion,

to every steadfast, resolute man who firmly settles matters.

And you are the one whose bounty Qays hopes for,

and even Lukayz, from beyond the Lahāzim.

You surpassed Nizār, O son of Ḥiṣn, in generosity

and in resolve amid the charges of massive, hardy stallions,

as a driver of heavily laden camels, when she strides proudly with him—

Fazārah, on the day of ever-worsening discord.
