ياO زُفَرُZufar بنُson of الحارثِal-Harith بنِson of الأكرمِthe noblest
قدindeed كنتَyou were فيin الحربِbattle كريمَnoble المَقدمِin advancing
O Zufar, son of al-Harith, son of the noblest,
You were indeed noble in your advance in battle,
إذwhen أحجمَdrew back القومُthe men ولمّاand had not yet تحجِمِyou drawn back
انكindeed you وابنَيكَand your two sons وصَلتُمyou all upheld مَحرَميmy sacred bond
when the men drew back, yet you did not.
Indeed, you and your two sons upheld my sacred bond,
بعدَafter العواليthe long lances بعدَafter ماthat ذبَّgrew dry فميmy mouth
وحَقَنَand kept from spilling اللهُGod بأيديكمthrough your hands دَميmy blood
after the long lances, after my mouth had gone dry.
And through your hands God kept my blood from spilling,
والرمحُand the spear يَهتَزُّquivers اهتزازَwith the quivering of المحجمِthe cupping lancet
منfrom بعدafter ماthat اختلَّpierced السنانُthe spearhead مِعصَميmy wrist
while the spear quivered like a cupping lancet,
after the spearhead had pierced my wrist.
أنقذتنيyou rescued me منfrom بطلٍa champion مُعَمَّمِturbaned
والخيلُand the horses تحتَbeneath العارِضِthe cloud المسوّمِmarked
You rescued me from a turbaned champion,
with the horses beneath the marked cloud.
