وماand not كُنتُI was تدعونيcalling me الخطوبُmisfortunes الضَّعائِفُminor
وما كُنتُ تدعوني الخطوبُ الضَّعائِفُ
Longing called me when the clan went east at dawn,
Love called me when dawn shone
though petty misfortunes had never called me.
And I was not called by trivial troubles

And departing camel-litters stirred my sorrows,
It stirred my sorrows, burdens haughtily carried
bearing gazelles decked in rich adornments.
On them are beautiful gazelles and ornamentation

Yesterday their birds had already appeared to me,
Just yesterday their birds appeared to me
flying right to left—had an augur read the birds.
They had flown freely, if only the returning birds were shooed
فياso, ah! قاتَلَmay confound اللهُGod الغوانيthe fair women فإنهاfor they are

قريبٌ بَعيدٌ وَصلُهُنَّ تنائِفُ
Ah, may God confound the fair women! They are
Oh, may God destroy singers for they
near yet far; union with them lies across desert wastes.
Are near, far, and uniting them are overlaps

You see them beguiling peoples with youthful passion,
You see them wearing their best clothes in the morning breeze
yet for all their scheming they are foolish.
Yet they are wearing what they wear lightly

They set out early without fulfilling a promise they had made;
They promised and did not fulfill their promise
the serving-maids drive their litters toward miserliness.
Up to stinginess their defects are halved
وقدand indeed كانَthere was فيهِمamong them ماas long as دَنَواthey remained near ليfor me نعمَةٌhappiness

وقرةُ عينٍ دَمعُها اليومَ ذارِفُ
While they were near, I had happiness among them,
Among them was what had approached me of bounty
and solace for an eye whose tears stream today.
And the delight of an eye whose tears today are pouring
ومِنand among لذَّةِthe delight of الدنياthis world حَديثٌconversation ونعمةٌand ease

ولهوٌ وحاجاتٌ تُتلّى طرائِفُ
Among this world's delights are conversation and ease,
And of the bliss of life is talk, grace
and amusement, and fresh desires pursued in turn.
Amusement and needs to fulfill diverse wishes

Then separation scattered us after a long stay,
The companions dispersed after long stay
and not all that souls desire is granted.
And not all that souls desire gives double

If I have now been given forbearance and gray hair instead,
Yesterday indeed my dream and old age were changed
my old age creeps in after my swaggering days.
My old age after youthful vigor is binding

How many a beloved has departed whose company we desire,
So how many a beloved whose gathering has appeared hateful
and how many grievous trials have burdens laid upon me,
And a marriage proposal that cost me much trouble

and choice, first-run wine whose blend the merchants thinned,
And a departing caravan whose leader sparkled
to warm us, with none of us turning away from drink.
To protect and among us there is no accord to drink

ليعلمَ مافينا عن البَيعِ كانِفُ
They pressed us and we pressed them; they countered us with a wily man,
So they departed and we kept ties with early rising
to learn that none of us would withdraw from the bargain.
To know that among us there is no unwillingness to sell

They lowered bulging wineskins to us, as though they were
So they lowered down to us slender ladies as if
shirtless men from Sind, their noses streaming.
Stripped of dress, plump, rosy forearms

Once we grew tipsy, count me among his friends;
When we woke we were reckoned among their friends
and back came morning wine and roasted slices of hump-fat.
And the dawn and the late evenings returned

Is it that, or a fair, freeborn woman of humankind,
Is that so or is it a white pleasant company
to whom the swallows brought my heart's affection?
Brought by my heart’s love to it yearnings

She has a meadow in my heart whose like was never grazed
It has a meadow in the heart that the like of it was not grazed
by a husband-hating woman, nor by haughty, weeping women.
By cows or shepherds driving lean sheep

I see what is right; its path never baffles me,
I see right does not tire against me in its way
when a guest visits me by night in the bitter cold,
When night lodges me with the bell ringer

when the star reaches mid-heaven in wintry weather,
When the star burdens the sky with extreme cold
as the dog growls and the snow crackles.
While the dog barks and snow falls noisily

Rabiʿa are my forefathers, who shared glory among themselves,
My forefathers, the lofty Ulayys divided the heights
whenever the present and the past are reckoned.
If any remainder of eras and bygones is counted

And Taghlib is my sea, its flood swelled by seas,
And my sea overcomes seas with floods
so no oarsman could master their currents.
Their currents could not be contained by oars

And Bakr and ʿAbd al-Qays are both our brothers;
And Bakr and Abdul Qays are our brothers together
Lukayz among them, and the Hanaʾif, have sufficed us.
Preventing for us the Letters and the Hanifs

And ʿAylan is of us on every day of dread,
And our sons are on every terrible day
and yields abundant milk when the Khanadif are summoned.
And milk abundantly the day midwives are called

From Khindif is the Messenger who calls to guidance,
And the one who called to right guidance by the message is from us
and from us are the imam and the abiding stars.
And the imam and the devoted worshipping stars

Your brother is he whose soul cannot suppress compassion,
Your brother whom the soul cannot stand
and grudges scatter in the face of provocation.
And refuses when safeguarded scriptures are recited

So we are the guiding rein, those through whom men find their way,
For we are the reins, the guided leader
while from others come the client, the follower, the sworn ally.
And without us the Lord of might takes a different course

When our heads knock they permit us with generosity
at whose two flanks the lowly followers seek refuge.
His buttresses wearing consecutive saddle pads

And horses come home at dusk amid our dwellings,
And we are where horses roam amidst our homes
and are given pure milk at night, though the milk-camels are dry and gaunt.
And neigh abundantly when they are in their stalls
