Ah, you who blame me, enough reproach!

And guide your own self aright, as far as you can.

For the guardians of forbearance have restored it

to me; I gave folly notice, and it turned back.

    Except that no dove sings

in a thicket without my remembering Rabab.

And the pleasure she gave us, while the mounts knelt,

was hurried—brief was the pleasure, and sweet.

I reached for her radiant face, which she turned

toward me, and a delicate mouth with sweet tooth-edges.

Her front teeth seemed the tips of a daisy

covered with a shower's moisture the moment it fell.

And a bevy of maidens between two camps, late

at night—I had tussled with them over their clothes.

They said, ‘Our people are nearby, so we must beware

the eyes of the wakeful among them, and their dogs.’

They crept like sandgrouse until they made a strip

of night a screen against their ill-wishers.

They were like the vanguard of pregnant she-camels, you ahead

with their foremost—no, rather, lighter of flank.

They turned away from me; I sought descriptions of four,

like a soul's desire in beauty and youth.

They diverted themselves; I spent myself, until grim grew

hearts and heads that had entered a blaze.

When I touched the coolness of a well-rounded wrist

with my palms, I dallied playfully with those standing there.

And al-Taymi did not set out to meet some need,

nor had he hired out riding camels in Iraq.

    But what al-Qutami was seeking

was delicate beauties of pure Arab stock, left behind by the little Arab band.
