قدindeed صبحتarrived in the morning قباقِباًQabaqib صَباحاin the morning
قد صبحت قباقِباً صَباحا
مهريةٌa Mahri she-camel قدindeed غلبتexcelled مِراحاin liveliness
مهريةٌ قد غلبت مِراحا
She reached Qabāqib in the morning—
She came to Qabaqib in the morning,
a Mahri she-camel that had prevailed over rest,
A Mahri she-camel that excelled in liveliness,
تحمِلُshe carries منfrom قيسٍQays فتىًa young man وَضّاحاradiant
تحمِلُ من قيسٍ فتىً وَضّاحا
سمحُgenerous اليدينِof both hands بالندىwith bounty نفّاحاlavish in giving
سمحُ اليدينِ بالندى نفّاحا
bearing a radiant young man of Qays,
Carrying a radiant young man of Qays,
open-handed with bounty, showering gifts.
Open-handed, lavish in bounty.
كأنّas though فيin الموكبِthe procession حينwhen لاحاhe appeared
كأنّ في الموكبِ حين لاحا
بدراًa full moon يزيدُincreases النظرَthe gaze انفساحاbreadth
بدراً يزيدُ النظرَ انفساحا
As though, within the cavalcade, when he appeared,
When he appeared in the procession, he seemed
he were a full moon that makes the gaze widen.
A full moon that broadens the gaze.
افلحَprospered ساقٍa water-bearer بيديكfrom your two hands امتاحاdrew water
افلحَ ساقٍ بيديك امتاحا
وقرّand found contentment عيناًin his eye ورَجاand hoped for الرِّباحاgain
وقرّ عيناً ورَجا الرِّباحا
The water-drawer prospered, drawing from your hands;
The water-bearer who drew from your hands has prospered,
his eye rejoiced, and he hoped for gain.
And found contentment and hoped for gain.
الاdo ... not? ترىyou see ماwhat غشيَcovered الاركاحاthe rocky slopes
الا ترى ما غشيَ الاركاحا
وغشيَand covered الخابورَthe Khabur والأملاحاand al-Amlah
وغشيَ الخابورَ والأملاحا
Do you not see what has covered the enclosures,
Do you not see what has covered the rocky slopes,
and covered the Khabur and al-Amlah?
And covered the Khabur and al-Amlah?
يُصفِّقونthey clap بالاكفِwith the hands الراحاthe palms
يُصفِّقون بالاكفِ الراحا
لمdid not يدعleave الثلجُthe snow بهاin it وجاحاshelter
لم يدع الثلجُ بها وجاحا
They strike palm against palm;
They strike their palms with their hands;
the snow has left no refuge there.
The snow has left no shelter there.
باللهِin God ترجوyou hope وبكand in you النجاحاsuccess
باللهِ ترجو وبك النجاحا
In God she hopes—and through you—for success.
In God you hope, and in you is hope of success.
