بني دارمٍ عن كُلِّ جانٍ وغارِمِ
May God reward with goodness—all recompense is in His hand—
May God reward with good—and recompense is in His hand—
the sons of Dārim, for every offender and debtor.
the sons of Dārim, on behalf of every offender and debtor.

They bore my baggage and delivered what I had entrusted
They carried my baggage and returned my entrusted goods
back to me, and restored to me the feathers of my foremost pinions.

على المثل امثالَ السنينِ الحواطمِ
There is no fault in them, save that their cauldrons,
And there is no fault in them, except that their cauldrons
as the proverb has it, are like the crushing years.
are, figuratively, like devastating years of famine.

Indeed, the legacies of those whose heirs they are
And indeed the legacies of those they inherit from
are treasures of glory, not treasures of dirhams.
are treasures of lofty honor, not treasures of dirhams.

What harm is there for one whose father and mother are traced
Nor does it harm one whose father and mother trace their descent
to Dārim, if he does not belong to Hāshim?
to Dārim that he does not belong to Hāshim.
