Ah, dwellings of the tribe at al-Akhdar, remain safe!

Yet none stays safe through the days and time.

Day and night visit them by turns: now with a ground-sweeping wind,

now with a piercing east wind from the night's end.

    تقرُّ بهم عَيناكَ لو دام دائمُ

    You dwell there, the tribe alive in contentment;

your eyes delight in them—if only anything could endure.

I have never seen an evildoer whose evil turned

against his people but he sought kinship with them, remorseful.

For if my clan had counted for little with me,

a branch of the tribe would be reviled, and sacred bonds profaned.

Then Death would withdraw from me, and there would come

upon me complaints from them and reproaches.

And a man full of concern, who spared me no counsel,

I disobeyed, though my heart understood what he said.

I told him: 'You cannot bring back what has passed

over me, nor do you know what tomorrow holds.'

Then, when I forsook my folly, there came forth from me

a brother of yours, contentious against whoever trades attacks.

And no Indian sword, selected by a sword-polisher,

keen in its stroke amid battle's ordeal,

is truer than I when he tests me; tested too

is a blow of its that shears off skulls.

And an unknown abode, its encircling trench breached by the flood,

whenever a rumbling summer downpour revisits it:

around its sides you see the outlying hearthstones, as though they were

    pigeons crouching beside the hearth.

And the bases of the dwellings' tethering-stalls seem

like troughs for jostling herds, battered by the seasons.

And a mighty one, huge in its dark mass, when it descends

toward al-Ashʿarat, heavy-laden and crowding close.

Ah, how often my sleep grew sweet, and I was drawn

toward indulgences by the graceful, pleasure-loving one,

a brother to those gone before, given to play, untroubled

by an evening return or a grazer setting out at dawn among the tribe.

When they camped on both sides of ʿArʿar, there were planted there

the lances' iron butts, by the numerous, noble men,

with leaders, advance companies, and dense ranks, as though they were

mountain passes joined to other mountain passes.

And Banu Saʿd encamped at Yabrin; among them were

long lances and prized, strong, hard-hoofed steeds.

And Banu Qays ibn ʿAylan encamped before them,

and Banu Bakr, the foreign-tongued, spent the night there.

I remembered Hammam, and what brought him to mind

was a constricting time, like a saddle's curved sides:

a radiant man, never ceasing to tie a banner

for beardless youths on sleek horses with low neighs.

He was given a choice and chose battle, though there might be seen

    beside him slender, delicate women.

One day his horses raid along the pass,

the bits clattering inside their jaws.

An elder raised you high, O Hammam; you inherited his legacy.

He built for you; fathers are builders or destroyers.

So tell Banu Marwan: 'Do not treat him

like another who sleeps while the forenoon wears on.'

And my people have come to miss from among them

the men of long lances and the orator who hurls attacks.

    No roofed dwelling can endure

when the pillars are drawn out from beneath the roofs.

Have you not seen how built houses decay,

    while poetry's sharp-edged verses endure?
