ليسis not الوكاءُal-Wika' بأهلٍworthy of أَنto يسودَrule ولاnor
ليس الوكاءُ بأهلٍ أَن يسودَ ولا
عمروAmr بأوَّلِthe foremost مسؤولٍone petitioned بهthrough him ذَهَباgold
عمرو بأوَّلِ مسؤولٍ به ذَهَبا
Al-Wika' is not fit to rule, nor
It is not for the loyal to rule, nor
Is Amr the foremost man through whom gold is sought.
For Amr to be foremost with gold adorned.
قدindeed هَجَّنواthey have debased الأوسَal-Aws حتىuntil ماnot يُصابَcan be found لهfor him
قد هَجَّنوا الأوسَ حتى ما يُصابَ له
فيamong الخيلthe horses جريُthe running جَوادٍa noble steed يأخُذُtakes القَصَباthe prize reed
في الخيل جريُ جَوادٍ يأخُذُ القَصَبا
They have debased al-Aws, till he can no longer be credited
They weakened the Aus until not one of them
Among the horses with the pace of a noble steed that takes the prize reed.
Could race a steed or take the lead.
سادَbecame chief of ابنُthe son of قيسٍQays بيوتَthe houses of النَمرal-Namir واعترفتand acknowledged
سادَ ابنُ قيسٍ بيوتَ النَمر واعترفت
لهto him اتمُّmost fully developed ذراعٍan arm فوقَهاabove it غَرَباhe went far beyond
له اتمُّ ذراعٍ فوقَها غَرَبا
Ibn Qays ruled the houses of al-Namir, and was acknowledged by
Ibn Qays ruled the houses of Namr and they confessed
The mightiest arm, which he overtopped by far.
His complete supremacy, bowing to him from above.
مَدَّhe stretched out اليدينِboth hands فلمso did not تقصُرfall short أنامِلُهُhis fingertips
مَدَّ اليدينِ فلم تقصُر أنامِلُهُ
وأدرَكَand he attained السورةَthe eminence العُلياthe highest التيthat طلَباhe sought
وأدرَكَ السورةَ العُليا التي طلَبا
He stretched out both hands, and his fingertips did not fall short,
He stretched out his hands which did not fall short,
And attained the highest eminence he had sought.
And attained the highest ambition he sought.
أيّوبAyyub أنتَyou امامُleader of النَمرِal-Namir اذwhen نُسِبتits lineage was traced
أيّوب أنتَ امامُ النَمرِ اذ نُسِبت
اذاwhen المخبّرُthe teller عنabout مجهولِهاits unknown origins نُسِباhad his lineage traced
اذا المخبّرُ عن مجهولِها نُسِبا
Ayyub, you are al-Namir's leader when its lineage is traced,
Ayyub, you are the chief of Namr when attributed,
When the teller of its unknown origins has his own lineage traced.
Since the informant is dubious until attributed.
أنتَyou الموطِّىءُthe one who subdues اكنافَthe flanks of الرجالِthe men اذاwhen
أنتَ الموطِّىءُ اكنافَ الرجالِ اذا
هَزَّhe brandished القناةَthe spear وَرَدَّand answered القولَwhat was said وانتصباand stood erect
هَزَّ القناةَ وَرَدَّ القولَ وانتصبا
You are the one who subdues men's flanks when
You humble the shoulders of men when
He brandishes the spear, answers what is said, and stands erect.
You shake the spear and refute the argument erect.
