فداء خالتي لبني عُقَيلٍ

وكعبٍ حينَ تزدحمُ الجدودُ

وكعبٍ حينَ تزدحمُ الجدودُ

May my maternal aunt be a ransom for the sons of ʿUqayl,

My aunt's sacrifice for the sons of Uqail

And Kaʿb, when fortunes clash.

And Ka'b when genealogies become crowded

هم تركوا على النَّشَّاش صرعى

هم تركوا على النَّشَّاش صرعى

بضربٍ ثمَّ أهوَنُهُ شَدِيدُ

بضربٍ ثمَّ أهوَنُهُ شَدِيدُ

They left men slain upon al-Nashshāsh,

They left prostrate on the bier

With blows there, even the mildest of which was fierce.

Slain with blows, then the most grievous of them severe
