O dwellings of loved ones, is there anyone to answer
O dwellings of my loved ones, is there one who will answer
On your behalf and soothe the longing of one whose abode is far away?
About you, and soothe the anguish of my distant pilgrimage?

فيها للسائلين طولُ اعتبارِ
They gave no answer, but their silence
They did not answer, but their silence to the questioners
Offers those who ask much cause for reflection.
Contains ample consideration.

If they have grown desolate, it is after companionship;
If you have become desolate after the departure of companions,
Or stand empty of them, it is after habitation.
Or empty after they left, after settlement,

Indeed, we reveled there for a time and a while,
We have enjoyed ourselves in you for a time and an hour,
And joined predawn hours to predawn hours.

Then the days struck us when we were at our best,
So the days cast us in the best condition while heedless and deceived,
In a moment of heedlessness and delusion.

So we parted after long togetherness,
And grew distant after the proximity of the dwellings.
And grew far apart after our dwellings had been close.
