عَدمتُmay I be deprived منfrom الحبيبةِthe beloved woman رَجعُa returning movement كفٍّa hand
إلىtoward حَلَّuntying المؤزَّرِthe waist-wrapped garment والنِطاقِand the girdle
May I be denied the beloved's hand reaching back
I yearned for the return of my beloved's hand
To undo her waist-wrap and girdle;
To the waist-sash and the belt's place
وهُنتُand may I be abased فلمand did not أصِلI join وَقتَthe time of اصطباحٍmorning drinking
لندمانيfor my boon companions بأوقاتِwith the times of اغتباقيmy evening drinking
And may I be abased, never joining the morning drinking-time
But I was too weak to arrive at dawn
Of my boon companions to the hours of my evening drinking,
That would reproach me for my times of heedlessness
لئنif indeed آخَيتُI took as a brother فيin الدنياthis world بخيلاًa miser
ولوand even if بلغhe reaches النِهايةَthe utmost فيin وفاقيaccord with me
If ever I take a miser as a brother in this world,
If in this life I was miserly in my affection
Even if he is in perfect accord with me.
Even if I reached the utmost in devotion

جميعاًtogether باختلافٍin disagreement واتِّفاقِand agreement
I sincerely befriend a man; he grows fond of me, and we proceed
I would reconcile with one who befriends me so we walk
Together, through disagreement and agreement.
Together despite our disagreements and accord

أَمِنّاwe are safe فيin الودادِaffection منfrom النِفاقِhypocrisy
And affection's covenant is preserved whenever
And the covenant of love is kept if we are
We are safe from hypocrisy in our affection.
Safe from hypocrisy in our affection

And I cut off every kindly man who keeps up ties
And I cut off all kinship and connection
If he mingles his nature with pretense.
If he mixes people with artifice

And many a man follows up a pleasant meeting—
And how many fine gatherings
One that brings joy—with an unhappy parting.
Are ruined by the evil of parting
