تبلَّج برَوحِ اليأسِ أو رَوحة الغِنى

تبلَّج برَوحِ اليأسِ أو رَوحة الغِنى

أو الصِدقِ لي في الوعدِ أو طلب العُذر

أو الصِدقِ لي في الوعدِ أو طلب العُذر

Let light break: bring me despair’s relief, or a breath of wealth,

Shine forth with the relief of despair or the ease of wealth,

or keep your promise faithfully to me, or offer an excuse.

Or with truthfulness in your promise to me, or a plea to be excused.

فما لي تُقى يحيى ولا حلمُ يوسُفٍ

فما لي تُقى يحيى ولا حلمُ يوسُفٍ

ولا صبرُ أيوبٍ ولا مُدَّةُ الخِضرِ

ولا صبرُ أيوبٍ ولا مُدَّةُ الخِضرِ

For I have neither John’s piety nor Joseph’s forbearance,

For I have neither Yahya’s piety nor Yusuf’s forbearance,

nor Job’s patience, nor al-Khidr’s length of days.

Nor Ayyub’s patience nor al-Khidr’s span of life.
