I caught a zurraq hawk from a hill,

And secured a sawdhaniq falcon from a rise.

    This one I brought moon-white,

Delicate in beauty, sweet and graceful.

And grieves the foe and pleases the friend.

It donned two coats: costly brocade,

And a mantle bearing an elegant pattern.

The threads of both are gold in silver,

Like your tracing fine script on parchment.

Its two legs are steeped in saffron perfume,

And its two eyes are lined with carnelian.

And this one I brought speckled,

Lovely in its ways, generous and good-natured.

It redeems pledges and pays the debts,

And draws the boon companion close and enriches the friend.

You would say its tail is Yemeni banded agate,

And imagine a blaze in its two eyes.

You take its flashes for a rain cloud,

And its crashing din for a catapult.

    تَبطَّنَ رِقّاً متيناً صَفيقا

    And this one has a jutting breast;

It has lined itself with tough, thick parchment.

It rivals the winds in flight,

And outstrips the blaze in its leaps.
