يمضي فيدرك حيّاً بعده خلفا
Hold fast with both hands to the one you love, for no one
Clasp the hands of the one you love, for no one
passes away whose replacement can be found among the living afterward.
Will live long enough to find a successor after him.

ولست تعتب إن أنكرت شيمَتَهُ
فالحرُّfor the noble man يستأنفbegins anew العتبىreconciliation إذاwhen أَنَفاhe takes offense
فالحرُّ يستأنف العتبى إذا أَنَفا
And you do not reproach him if you disapprove of his character,
Do not blame me if I deny his merit,
for a noble man seeks reconciliation anew when he takes offense.
For the free man resumes reproach if he becomes angry.

يوماًon any day فانصفهso be fair to him فيin الودِّlove وانتصفاand claim your due
يوماً فانصفه في الودِّ وانتصفا
Who is it that gained good fortune without his companion
Who is the one who obtained a share without his companion
on any day? So be fair to him in love, and claim your due.
One day, so do him justice in affection and gain satisfaction.
