Suʿād has departed; she was the town’s peerless beauty.

So I said, “My soul has parted from the body.”

O noblest of people in character, and most richly endowed

With intellect, and first among them in it to reach the goal,

You have become the best of all who walk on foot,

Through judgment and intellect, not brute force and endurance.

Though you have weakened and illness has worn you down, yet

Your clear mind’s powers have not weakened or wavered.

If people’s finest quality were their brute strength,

Rather than their minds, superiority would belong to the lion.

And intellect is something that none bestows

Upon people but the Generous One, the One, the Self-Sufficient.
