1. يا قائِصُ أغدُ عَلَينا

    بِزُرَّقٍ مَخبورِ

    O hunter, come to us at dawn

    With a proven zurrāq hawk,

    مغالبٍ للصُقورِ

    Challenging goshawks,

    Vying for mastery with falcons.

    Doubly dappled,

    Clad outwardly in striped cloaks,

    Lined inwardly with silk;

    مُحَجَّنِ الأُظفور

    And the paw of a crushing beast,

    With a hooked talon.

    طيف لززت من صقور

    You would say the hooks within it

    Were tightly fitted together from falcons.

    كقَرنِ ظبيٍ غَريرِ

    And a curving beak,

    Like a young gazelle's horn,

    كالجندَلِ المُستَديرِ

    In a head enclosing it,

    Like a rounded stone;

  9. وصَدرُ بازٍ طَريرٍ

    مُفَوَّفُ التَحبيرِ

    And a handsome goshawk's breast,

    Adorned with fine stripes,

  10. كأَنَّهُ ثَوبُ وَشيٍ

    مُعرَّجُ التَسييرِ

    As though it were a brocade robe,

    With zigzag stripes.

  11. له ظنابيبُ هِقلٍ

    وعينُ صقرٍ ذعورِ

    It has a male ostrich's shanks,

    And a startled falcon's eye;

  12. تخالها حين يعتا

    ن جذوةً من سعير

    You would take it, when it gazes,

    For an ember from a blazing fire.

  13. له بديعةُ صوتٍ

    كنبذة من زَميرِ

    It has a wondrous voice,

    Like a snatch of piping;

    Going out at dawn to drink wine,

    It distracts him from every flute

    Echoing [bass?] and treble.
