    And when we met on the morning of our farewell,

    They signaled to us with languid eyes.

    And nothing is a stronger witness for a lover

    Than a glance that brings him what lies within hearts.

    It was as though tears, held back from flowing,

    For fear of foes, from the eyes of wild-ox calves,

    Were remnants of spray upon a meadow in bloom,

    Which had received it from the showers of early-morning clouds.

    وإن رُقبوا غَيَّضنَها في المحاجِرِ

    When they grew heedless, the women made the tears shimmer in their eyelids;

    And if they were watched, the women made them subside within the eye sockets.
