وَعادَand he visited الأَوابِدَthe wild beasts قَبلَbefore الصَباحِdawn
وَعادَ الأَوابِدَ قَبلَ الصَباحِ
بنَدبٍwith a bold one يُفَرِّقُscatters فيهاamong them النُدوباscars
بنَدبٍ يُفَرِّقُ فيها النُدوبا
And he visited the wild beasts before dawn,
The wild goats returned before dawn
with a bold one that scatters scars among them:
Bleating, their laments scattering
مَروحٍlively طَموحeager حَميfiery الفؤادِthe heart
مَروحٍ طَموح حَمي الفؤادِ
تَحسِبُyou suppose فيin الطَرفِthe eye منهُof it قُلوباhearts
تَحسِبُ في الطَرفِ منهُ قُلوبا
lively, eager, fiery-hearted,
Energetic, ambitious, hot hearted
you would think its eye held many hearts;
Their glances seem to be hearts
حصيفٍshrewd يكادُit almost لفَرطِbecause of the excess of الذكاءِintelligence
حصيفٍ يكادُ لفَرطِ الذكاءِ
يُبديreveals لمُستخبريهto those who question it العُيوباfaults
يُبدي لمُستخبريه العُيوبا
shrewd, so exceedingly intelligent
Clever, almost too clever
that it almost reveals faults to those who question it.
Revealing their faults to questioners
كساclothed صَدرَهُits chest صُدرةٌa vest مِنof حريرٍsilk
كسا صَدرَهُ صُدرةٌ مِن حريرٍ
وَشقَّand slit علىat النَحرِthe throat مِنهُfrom it الجيوباthe garment openings
وَشقَّ على النَحرِ مِنهُ الجيوبا
A silken vest clothed its chest,
Wearing silk vests
with openings cut into it at the throat.
With pockets slashing their chests
وَيفتَرُّand parts its lips عَنto reveal عُصُلٍcurved fangs شُزَّبٍslender
وَيفتَرُّ عَن عُصُلٍ شُزَّبٍ
يظلُّremains الحديدُiron لَدَيهاbefore them نَكيباdefeated
يظلُّ الحديدُ لَدَيها نَكيبا
And it bares curved, slender fangs,
Baring sharp, pointed teeth
before which iron remains defeated.
Beside which iron seems to bend
إذاif فاتَfails فيin الصَيدِthe hunt حِفظُthe vigilance of الرَقيthe keeper (الرقيب, continued)
إذا فاتَ في الصَيدِ حِفظُ الرَقي
بِcompletion of الرقيب ('the keeper') كانَwould be الحِفاظfidelity عَلَيهover it رَقيباa watcher
بِ كانَ الحِفاظ عَلَيه رَقيبا
If, in the hunt, the keeper's vigilance fails,
If he misses in the hunt, lacking a charm
its fidelity stands watch over it.
The charm would have been his keeper
