I shall surely brave Time with a resolve of my own

that frightens my enemies and protects my neighbor.

And I shall approach this generous man with my bounty,

and take my revenge on this base man.

Otherwise, may my beloved’s fingertips never reach

    to wind a veil or lay aside a waist-wrap;

and may I warily avoid my enemies’ eyes

when drinking wine or casting off the bridle.

I swear a righteous oath: no miser’s eye has turned

toward my fire’s light and found light from my fire.

And I surely charge my household, if he seeks to visit me,

and if he comes as my guest, not to let him lodge in my house.

And how can he visit people or seek their hospitality—

a young man who recognizes no visitor’s right to welcome?
