    Take out our goshawk, friend.

And set out at dawn; let us banish hardship through its ease.

Moon-bright, were it to shine in darkness,

Those watching would have no need of that darkness's moon.

Its eyelids restless, you would think it

Nursing a grudge in its smoldering anger.

    خَلقُها يَدعو إلى حَذَرِه

    Its head is like a perfumer's grinding stone;

Its shape calls on you to beware of it.

And its beak is like a gazelle's horn,

Set in the broad, deep hollow of its gape.

And like onyx encircled with gold

Is the part of its eye that turns with its gaze.

Clad [uncertain reading] in two striped robes,

With an [undergarment?] revealing its breast.

    Fierce—its appearance bears witness,

When you meet it, to its true mettle.

Its resolve is assured of victory,

So it does not advance at its own peril.

    Attaining its desire through toil,

Triumphant through prudence amid its perils.

And when its ears are enticed

By the faint sound of a creature not before it,

I said: within its eyes are hearts

That seek whatever it has traced of the creature's trail.

It darts at the birds, cleaving the air,

Like an arrow springing from its bowstring.

Then they splinter away from it, dispersing,

Like dark clouds clearing from their rain.

Then it outstrips them and turns them back,

Like an eye returning from its gaze.

And tears their [feathers?] into shreds,

Like blossoms scattering from their trees.
