My two friends, does sorrow have a lover’s eye,
My beloved, does a lover's sadness have an end?
Or is there fire in her entrails, though she is unaware?
Or is it like the fire in its ashes, unaware?

She pointed toward the land of Iraq, and soon
She gestured to the land of Iraq, and so
Her tears were flowing like scattered pearls.
Her tears began to flow like scattered pearls.

A cloud resembling a bereaved mother who had lost her only child,
A cloud lamented the loss of her only one—
So she turned aside for him toward the meadows, over a grave
So she hurried to the tomb in the meadows.
تَسَربلit clothed itself وشياًbrocade منfrom حُزونٍrugged hills تطَرَّزَتwere embroidered
مَطارِفُهاtheir mantles طرزاًpatterns منof البَرقlightning كالتِبرِlike unworked gold
Clad in brocade from rugged hills, whose embroidered
She wore a gown of sorrow embroidered
Mantles bore patterns of lightning, like gold dust.
With lightning bolts like needles going through.
فوَشيٌso, brocade بلاwithout رقمٍpatterning ورقمٌand patterning بلاwithout يَدٍa hand
ودمعٌand tears بلاwithout عَينٍan eye وضِحكٌand laughter بلاwithout ثَغرِa mouth
So, brocade without patterning, and patterning without a hand,
A number with no dots, dots with no number,
And tears without an eye, and laughter without a mouth.
A tear without an eye, laughter without lips.
