At times I set out early, while dawn’s eyes are drowsy,

And the sun lies asleep, unseen by the eye that seeks her,

With long-winged hawks that eagerness hastens on,

Like lions you startle, and fire you kindle.

Their beaks are hooked, their talons curved,

As though made of iron and fitted into the birds.

    Their eyes seem onyx, encircled

By rings of gold melted in the corners of their eyes.

They roll them beneath inner eyelids that sweep

Their motes away, then hide those eyes and reveal them.

They almost read in their trainer’s eyes

Commands he conveys from his heart’s secret thoughts.

I urge them toward deep water whose watering places have appeared,

And its stream sped onward, and its swollen waters churned.

    سبحان مبدعها فينا ومنشيها

    Within it are birds of many distinct kinds;

Glory to Him who fashioned them among us and brought them into being!

    Brocaded with gilded colors,

Embroidered with patterns—exalted is their Embroiderer!

They seem like gardens with flowers amid them,

Their outer reaches encircling their inner grounds.

    Embroidered with striped ornamental bands,

Like onyx: at times they spread them out and fold them away.

What do you think, with creatures like beasts of prey against them—

Stealthy snatchers I have appointed judges over them?
