إنif كنتyou are بالذلِّwith humiliation راضياًcontent فأرِحthen let rest
إن كنت بالذلِّ راضياً فأرِح
فيin الجفنthe scabbard حدَّthe edge المهندthe Indian-steel sword الخَذِمِkeen-cutting
في الجفن حدَّ المهند الخَذِمِ
If you are content with humiliation, leave at rest
If you are content with humiliation, relax,
in the scabbard the edge of the keen Indian blade.
And limit the kohl of the eyelid to the worn out stump.
لاdo not تركبride الخيلhorses كالرجالlike men ولاand do not
لا تركب الخيل كالرجال ولا
تلبسwear لبوسarmor الفوارسthe horsemen البُهَمِfearless
تلبس لبوس الفوارس البُهَمِ
Do not ride horses like men, nor
Do not ride horses like the men, nor
wear the armor of fearless horsemen.
Wear the clothing of the gallant knights.
فالمرءfor a man بالجودthrough generosity والشجاعةand courage والand the
فالمرء بالجود والشجاعة وال
همَّةhigh resolve يحويattains محاسنfine qualities الكرمِnobility
همَّة يحوي محاسن الكرمِ
For a man, through generosity, courage, and
For the essence of a man is in his generosity, bravery, and
high resolve, attains the finest qualities of nobility.
Aspiration which encompass the virtues of nobility.
