Shurahbil, it was not for religion that you abandoned our cause,

but out of hatred for Jarir al-Maliki,

and enmity that crept between Sa'd and him.

So it became like a camel-driver without a camel.

And what part had you when Bajila had reproached

    Quraysh? O God, what a far-removed supporter!

Do you judge a matter you did not witness on a dubious claim,

though every discerning person's fair judgment has been baffled by it?

Men speak who were not leaders,

nor present at what they passed on to you.

And what worth has the talk of absent men who bandied about

things from the unseen that lured them on through deceit?

And you disregard that the people gave their pledges

to Ali, with affection for him and joy.

When told, 'Bring forth one whom you follow,

an equal to him,' they named no equal.

Perhaps in the morning you will come to grief through fighting him,

Shurahbil, what you have undertaken is no small matter.
