إنِّيindeed I أخَالُthink عَلِيَّاAli غَيْرَnot مُرْتَدَعٍdeterred
حَتَّىuntil يُؤدَّىis fulfilled كِتَابُthe Book of اللهِGod والذَّمَمُand the covenants
I think Ali will not be deterred
I think of Ali as one who is not impetuous,
Until God's Book is upheld and the covenants honored.
Until the Book of God and the oaths are fulfilled,
حَتَّىuntil تَرَىyou see النَّقْعَthe battle-dust مَعْصُوباًbound بِلِمَّتِهِabout his locks
نَقْعُdust of الْقَبَائِلِthe tribes فِيin عِرنِينِهِhis nose شَمَمُproud loftiness
Until you see battle-dust bound about his locks—
Until you see the she-camel muzzled in its rope,
The dust of the tribes, his nose held high in pride.
The muzzle of the tribes snarling in their encampment,
غضْبَانُwrathful يَحْرِقُhe grinds نَابِيْهِhis two fangs بِجَرَّتِهِon his cud
كَمَاas يَغُطُّsnorts الْفَنِيقُthe stud camel الْمُصْعَبُunbroken القَطِمُraging in rut
Wrathful, he grinds his two fangs on his cud,
Angry, burning his lips with his ember,
As the unbroken stud camel snorts, raging in rut.
As the palm tree covers the laden stalks with its coat,
حَتَّىuntil يُزِيلَhe dislodges ابنَson of حَرْبٍHarb فيin إِمَارَتِهhis command
كَمَاas تَنَكَّبَturned aside تِيسُthe bull camel الجَيْلَةِthe aged camel herd الحلُمُtick-ridden
Until he unseats Ibn Harb as ruler,
Until the son of Harb is removed from his rule
As the tick-ridden bull of the old camel herd turns aside.
As the he-goat of Al-Jaila turned away submissive,
أَوْor أَنْthat تَرَوْهُyou see him كَمِثَلِlike الصَّقْرِthe falcon مُرتَئِباًpoised
يَخْفُقْنَthey flutter مِنْfrom حَوْلِهِaround him العِقْبَانُthe eagles والرَّخَمُand the vultures
Or you see him poised like a falcon,
Or you see him like an eagle roosting aloft
Eagles and vultures fluttering around him.
With the crows and vultures wheeling around him.
