لَوْif شَهِدَتْhad witnessed هِنْدٌHind لَعَمْرِيby my life مُقَامَنَاour stand
بِصِفِّينَat Siffin فَدَّتْنَاshe would have offered ransom for us بِكَعْبِwith Ka'b بْنِson of عَامِرAmir
If Hind had witnessed—by my life—our stand
At Siffin, she would have offered Ka'b ibn Amir as our ransom.
فَيَاand oh لَيْتَif only أنَّthat الأرْضَthe earth تُنْشَرُwere opened up عَنْهُمُfrom over them
فَيُخْبِرَهُمْso he might inform them أنْبَاءَنَاour news كُلevery خَابِرone who knows
Oh, if only the earth were opened above them,
So everyone who knew might tell them our news
بِصِفِّينَat Siffin إذْwhen قُمْنَاwe stood كَأَنَّاas though we were سَحَابَةٌa cloud
سَحَابُclouds وَلِيٍّrain following earlier rain صَوْبُهُits downpour مُتَبَادِرrushing forth
At Siffin, when we stood as though we were a cloud—
A cloud of rain upon rain, its downpour rushing forth.
فَأُقْسِمُand I swear لَوْif لاَقَيْتُI had met عَمْرَAmr بْنَson of وَائِلٍWa'il
بِصِفِّينَat Siffin ألْفَانِيwould have found me بِعَهْدِهِto his pledge غَادِرa betrayer
And I swear, had I met Amr ibn Wa'il
At Siffin, that breaker of his pledge would have found me.
فَوَلَّوْاthen they turned and fled سِرَاعاًswiftly مُوخَمِينَsickened كَأنَّهُمْas though they were
نَعامٌostriches تَلاقَىconverged خَلْفَهُنَّbehind them زَوَاجِرdriving cries
Then they turned and fled swiftly, sickened, as though they were
Ostriches, behind which driving cries converged.
وَفَرَّand fled ابْنُthe son of حَرْبٍHarb عَفَّرَmay He rub in dust اللَّهُGod وَجْهَهُhis face
وَأَرْدَاهُand may He cast him down خِزْياًin disgrace إنَّindeed رَبِّيَmy Lord قَادِرable
And Ibn Harb fled—may God rub his face in dust
And cast him down in disgrace; surely my Lord is able.
مُعاوِيَO Mu'awiya لَوْلاَwere it not أنْthat فَقَدْنَاكَwe missed you فِيهِمُamong them
لَغُودِرْتَyou would surely have been left مَطْرُوحاًcast down بهَاthere مَعْwith مَعَاشِرcompanies
Mu'awiya, had we not missed you among them,
You would surely have been left sprawled there with companies—
مَعَاشِرِcompanies of قَوْمٍmen ضَلَّلَmay He make vain اللَّهُGod سَعْيَهُمْtheir striving
وأَخزَاهُمُand may He disgrace them رَبِّيmy Lord كَخِزْيِlike the disgrace of السَّواحِرthe sorceresses
Companies of men—may God make their striving vain,
And may my Lord disgrace them as sorceresses are disgraced.
