رَضينَاwe are content بِمَاwith what يَرْضَىapproves عَليٌّAli لَنَاfor us بِهِwith it
وَإنْand even if كَانَthere is فِيمَاin what يَأتِhe does كذاthus جَدْعcutting off المَناخِرِthe nostrils
We are content with whatever ʿAlī approves for us herein,
We are content with what Ali approves for us,
even if what follows is this—the mutilation of noses.
Even if what he thus does includes the cutting off of noses.
وَصِيُّthe testamentary executor رَسُولِthe Messenger of اللهِGod مِنْfrom دُونِapart from أهْلِهِhis kin

He is the Messenger of God’s legatee, to the exclusion of his kin,
The executor of God's Messenger's will, rather than his kin,
and his heir after the eminent paternal uncles.
And his heir after the elder paternal uncles.
رَضِيَhe approved بابْنِof the son of مَخْدوجٍMakhdūj فَقُلْنَاso we said الرّضَاapproval
رِضَاكَyour approval وَحَسَّانُand Ḥassān الرّضَاthe approved choice لَلْعَشَائِرِfor the clans
We accepted Ibn Makhdūj and said: “Consent—
He approved of Ibn Makhdūj, so we said: “Our approval
your consent; consent suffices us where the tribes are concerned.”
Is your approval; and Ḥassān is the choice of the clans.”
وَللأشْعَثِand for al-Ashʿath الكِنْدِيّthe Kindite فيamong النَّاسِthe people فَضْلُهُhis distinction

Al-Ashʿath the Kindite, too, has his distinction among men,
And al-Ashʿath al-Kindī has his distinction among the people,
inherited from one great forebear after another—
He inherited it from one great forebear after another.

crowned by noble and mighty forefathers,
With crowned forefathers, noble and mighty,
from days when kingship dwelt among the sons of ʿAmr ibn ʿĀmir.
When kingship lay among the descendants of ʿAmr ibn ʿĀmir.
فَلَوْلاَso, were it not for أمِيرُthe Commander of الْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithful وَحَقُّهُand his claim

Were it not for the Commander of the Faithful and his right
But for the Commander of the Faithful and his claim
over us, we would surely have caused Ḥurayth ibn Jābir grief.
Upon us, we would have brought grief to Ḥurayth ibn Jābir.
وَمَاand there is no بابْنِin the son of مَخْدُوجِMakhdūj بْنِson of ذهْلٍDhuhl نَقِيصَةٌshortcoming

There is no defect in Ibn Makhdūj ibn Dhuhl,
And there is no shortcoming in Ibn Makhdūj ibn Dhuhl,
nor are our people among Wāʾil objects of reproach.
Nor are our people among Wāʾil blemished.
وَلَيْسَand there is not لَنَاfor us إلاَّexcept الرّضَاcontentment بابْنِwith the son of حُرَّةٍa free woman

We have no choice but to accept a freeborn woman’s son,
And we can only be content with a free woman's son,
high-nosed, long in both forearms—an Emigrant—
With a lofty nose and long forearms, an emigrant,
عَلَىdespite أنَّthe fact that فِيin تِلْكَthose النُّفُوسsouls حَزَازَةًresentment

though in those souls a rankling resentment lingers,
Although in those souls there is resentment,
and a fracture the hands of bone-setters labor to mend.
And a fracture that the menders' palms repair.
