وَكَذَّبْتُand I disbelieved طَرْفِيmy eye فِيكِconcerning you والطَّرْفُand the eye صَادِقٌtruthful
وَكَذَّبْتُ طَرْفِي فِيكِ والطَّرْفُ صَادِقٌ
وَأسْمَعْتُand I caused to hear أُذْنِيmy ear عَنْكِabout you مَاwhat لَيْسَdoes not تَسْمَعُit hears
وَأسْمَعْتُ أُذْنِي عَنْكِ مَا لَيْسَ تَسْمَعُ
And I disbelieved my eye concerning you, though the eye was truthful.
I denied my eyes concerning you though the eyes speak truth,
And I made my ear hear of you what it did not hear.
And I made my ears deaf to you though they do hear,
وَلَمْand did not اسْكُنِI dwell الأرْضَthe land التِيwhich تَسْكُنِينَهَاyou dwell in it
وَلَمْ اسْكُنِ الأرْضَ التِي تَسْكُنِينَهَا
لَئِلاَّlest يَقُولُواthey say صَابِرٌpatient لَيْسَdoes not يَجْزَعُhe gives way to anguish
لَئِلاَّ يَقُولُوا صَابِرٌ لَيْسَ يَجْزَعُ
And I did not dwell in the land where you dwell,
And I did not live in the land where you live,
Lest they say, 'He is patient; he does not give way to anguish.'
Lest they say, "He is patient; he does not grieve."
فَلاَso not كَمَدِيmy grief يَفْنَىends وَلاَnor لَكَyou have رِقَّةٌtenderness
فَلاَ كَمَدِي يَفْنَى وَلاَ لَكَ رِقَّةٌ
وَلاَnor عَنْكِfrom you إقْصَارٌturning away وَلاَnor فِيكِin you مَطْمَعُhope
وَلاَ عَنْكِ إقْصَارٌ وَلاَ فِيكِ مَطْمَعُ
So my grief does not end, and you have no tenderness,
So neither my firmness diminishes, nor have you tenderness,
Nor is there any turning away from you, nor any hope in you.
Nor concerning you, indifference; nor in you, hope.
