وَرَكْبٍand a band of riders يُحِبُّونَthey love الرقَادَsleep بَعَثْتُهُمْI roused them
عَلَىalong لاحبٍa clear track يَعْلُوclimbs over الأحِزَّةَthe rocky ridges بِالسَّحْلِat al-Sahl
And I roused a band of riders who loved sleep,
And a band who love to slumber I roused
Along a clear track climbing the rocky ridges at al-Sahl.
Upon a camel litter that mounts the saddles with ease
وَقُمْتُand I rose إلىtoward حرْفٍa lean, sturdy she-camel كَأنَّas though قُتُودَهَاher saddle beams
إذاwhen دَقَّgrew thin أعْنَاقُthe necks الْمَطِيّthe riding camels عَلَىon فَحْلِa male camel
And I rose and approached a lean, sturdy she-camel, whose saddle beams seemed,
And I went to a creek that seemed
When the riding camels' necks grew thin, to rest on a male camel.
When the necks of the riding-beasts knock on the stallion
وَمَاءٍand water كَلَوْنِlike the color of الغِشلِdirty washings قَدْalready عَادَhad become آجِناًstagnant
قَليلٌfew بِهِaround it الأصواتُthe sounds فِيin بَلَدٍa land مَحْلِbarren
And water, the color of dirty washings, had grown stagnant,
And water the color of murky clouds returned turbid
With few sounds about it, in a barren land.
Few are the sounds in it in a barren land
وَجَدْتُI found عَلَيْهِbeside it الذّئْبَthe wolf يَعْوِيhowling كَأَنَّهُas though he
خَلِيعٌan outcast خَلاَwas bereft مِنْof كُلّall مَالٍwealth وَمِنْand of أهْلِfamily
I found a wolf beside it, howling as though he were
And I found upon it the wolf howling as though it were
An outcast bereft of all wealth and of kin.
A wretch devoid of all wealth and people
فَقُلْتُso I said لَهُto him يَاO ذِئْبُwolf هَلْis there? لَكَfor you مِنْany فَتًىa young man
يُوَاسِيshares generously بِلاَwithout مَنّflaunting favors عَلَيْكَover you وَلاَand without بُخْلِstinginess
So I said to him, 'Wolf, would you like a young man
So I said to it, "O wolf, is there a young man for you
Who shares with you without flaunting favors or being stingy?'
Who consoles you without reluctance or stinginess?"
فَقَالَthen he said هَدَأكَmay He guide you اللهGod لِلرشُدto right conduct إنَّمَاonly
دَعَوْتَyou invited لِمَاto what لَمْdid not يَأتِهِdo it سَبُعٌa beast of prey قَبْلِيbefore me
He said, 'May God guide you aright! You have only
It said, "God give you guidance to righteousness, you have invited
Invited me to what no beast of prey before me has done.
To what no predator before me has come to
فَلَسْتso I am not بِآتيهِgoing to do it وَلاَnor أسْتَطِيعُهI can do it
وَلاَكَbut اسْقِنِيgive me a drink إنْif كَانَis مَاؤكَyour water ذَاhaving فَضْلِa surplus
I will not do it, nor am I able to;
I cannot come to it nor can I manage it
But give me a drink, if you have water to spare.'
Nor give me drink if your water has surplus"
فَقُلْتُso I said عَلَيْكَyou should go to الحَوْضَthe trough إنِّيindeed I تَرَكْتُهُI left it
وَفِيand in صَغْوِهِits sloping side فَضْلُthe remainder القَلُوصِthe young she-camel منَfrom السِّجْلِthe bucketful
So I said, 'Go to the trough; I have left it
I said, "The pond is at your disposal, I left it
With the young she-camel's leavings from the bucketful in its lower side.'
With leftover little rainwater from the downpour"
فَطَرَّبَthen he trilled his howl يَسْتَعْوِيsummoning with howls ذئَاباًwolves كَثِيرَةًmany
وَعُدْتُand I returned فَكُلُّso each مِنْbecause of هَوَاهُhis desire عَلَىengaged in شُغْلِoccupation
Then he raised a lilting howl, summoning many wolves,
It was delighted, howling for many she-wolves
And I returned; each of us was busy with his own desire.
And I returned, each to his own preoccupation
