Passion wrongs my heart and grants it refuge,

and commands me; indeed, the beloved is a ruler.

أطوع لامر الحب طوع مسلمٍ

وإن كان من شأني أبا ونفور

وإن كان من شأني أبا ونفور

I obey love's command with the obedience of one who submits,

though defiance and aversion are my nature.

أغار عليه من لحاظي صيانةٍ

أغار عليه من لحاظي صيانةٍ

وأكرمه إن المحب غيور

وأكرمه إن المحب غيور

I jealously shield him even from my own glances,

and honor him; indeed, a lover is jealous.

أخف إلى لقيا الحبيب وإنني

أخف إلى لقيا الحبيب وإنني

لعمرك في كل الأمور وقور

لعمرك في كل الأمور وقور

I hasten to meet the beloved, though I am—

by your life—composed in all affairs.
