وللقلب في حين النداء وجيب
They call to my heart, and passion answers;
They call to my heart, and passion answers.
for hearts throb when the call comes.
And the heart throbs at the moment of the call.
مشوقfull of longing دعاهsummoned it الشوقyearning والوجدand love’s anguish والهوىand desire
مشوق دعاه الشوق والوجد والهوى
يجيبit answers نداءthe call of الحبlove وهوand it is نجيبnoble
يجيب نداء الحب وهو نجيب
A yearning lover, summoned by longing, ardor, and desire,
Full of longing, summoned by yearning, love’s anguish, and desire,
answers love’s call—and noble is he who answers.
It answers love’s call, noble as it is.
يقاسيendures فؤاديmy heart الوجدlove’s anguish والحبwhile the beloved واصلٌmaintains union
يقاسي فؤادي الوجد والحب واصلٌ
فكيفthen how تراهwould you see it إنif جفاهshunned it حبيبa beloved
فكيف تراه إن جفاه حبيب
My heart suffers yearning though love remains true to me;
My heart endures love’s anguish even while the beloved is close;
how, then, would you find it if a beloved shunned it?
How, then, would you find it if a beloved shunned it?
إذاwhen أخطأerr in الأحبابthe lovers ترتيبordering حالهمtheir affairs
إذا أخطأ الأحباب ترتيب حالهم
فإنthen indeed فؤاديmy heart دائماًalways ليصيبsurely gets it right
فإن فؤادي دائماً ليصيب
When lovers err in ordering their affairs,
When lovers err in ordering their affairs,
my heart, indeed, always judges rightly.
Then my heart surely always gets it right.
عليمٌwell versed بأسرارin the secrets of الغرامpassion لأهunclear as written; likely 'because it'
عليمٌ بأسرار الغرام لأه
بصيرknowledgeable بأدواءabout the ailments of الحسانbeautiful women طبيبa physician
بصير بأدواء الحسان طبيب
It knows the mysteries of passion, for it is
Well versed in passion’s secrets, [perhaps: because it is]
well versed in the ailments wrought by beauties—a physician.
Skilled in the ailments of beautiful women—a physician.
يواصلنيkeeps close to me سراsecretly ويصرمand breaks off relations ظاهراًopenly
يواصلني سرا ويصرم ظاهراً
وذلكand that منamong أفعالهنtheir deeds (those women’s) عجيبstrange
وذلك من أفعالهن عجيب
He meets with me in secret, yet cuts me off in public;
My beloved keeps close to me in secret and breaks with me openly;
and that, among their deeds, is wondrous.
And that, among their deeds, is strange.
