Do you know that my heart is not sober,

And that I am far from forgetting you?

And I used always to hunt lofty honors,

But now I have become the beauties’ prey.

The miserly woman gives me a cup of rejection,

And mixes it with wine to console me.

And had she wished me life forever, she would have quenched

My heart’s burning heat with pure, cold water.

And the fair one would have done a kindness,

But she encounters none but a reproacher.

So give me wine to drink—may I be your ransom—

And call to me: ‘Come for a morning drink.’
