وإذا توعرت المسالك لم أرد

فيها السرى إلا برأي مقمر

And when the paths grow rugged, I do not seek

When the paths become difficult, I do not intend

to travel them by night except with moon-bright judgment.

To travel them, except with enlightened opinion.

وإذا طلبت عظيمة فمفاتحي

وإذا طلبت عظيمة فمفاتحي

فيها العزيمة والسنان السمهري

فيها العزيمة والسنان السمهري

And when I pursue a great undertaking, my keys

And when I seek a great task, my keys to it

to it are resolve and the stout spearhead.

Are determination and a sharp sword.
