أقوم على الأيام خير مقام

I take the noblest stand against the days,

I rise above the days, the best of standings,

And kindle among my enemies the most dreadful blaze.

And kindle in the enemies the worst of flames.

وانفق في كسب المحامد مهجتي

وانفق في كسب المحامد مهجتي

ولو كان في الذكر الجميل حمامي

ولو كان في الذكر الجميل حمامي

And spend my lifeblood in earning praise,

I spend my brain attaining praise,

Even if honorable remembrance should mean my death.

Even if my only dwelling were a beautiful hymn.

وابلغ من دنياي نفسي سؤلها

وابلغ من دنياي نفسي سؤلها

واضرب في كل العلى بسهام

واضرب في كل العلى بسهام

And grant my soul its desire from this world of mine,

I ask from my soul what it yearns beyond my life,

And cast arrows for a share in every lofty honor.

And shoot the loftiest realms with arrows.

إذا فضح الأملاك نقصٌ فإنه

يبينه عند الأنام تمامي

If a flaw disgraces kings, it is

If the angels reveal any shortcoming,

My perfection that reveals it before mankind.

My perfection shows it to mankind.
