The finest thing that proverbs have carried abroad
The best proverbs composed
Is praise of God, who has no equal.
Praise God, who has no equal

So praise be to God for His grace
Of bounty that speech is too feeble to enumerate.
That the tongue falls short of enumerating

You have composed virtues in eloquent words
And thus adorn the ears of those who memorize them.
That delighted the ears of scholars

None attains generosity but those who reap

And when affliction descends, He is a hidden kindness.
When calamity comes, He is gently hidden

Seize the chance to act in its proper season,
Seize the opportunity in its time
And prostrate yourself to the wicked ape in its time.
And bow to evil in its age

One nearing ruin is content with captivity's bond.
He is pleased to tie the knot who found the bracelet

The measure of self-restraint is contentment with enough;
The limit of chastity is being content with sufficiency
No livelihood is straitened while God suffices.
No living was straitened while God suffices

The age of generosity and selflessness is gone.
The time of generosity and preferring others has passed

Who tasks souls against their nature
Wearies himself seeking benefits that cannot be expected from them.
Wearies with what will not benefit them

And whoever singles out a base man for bounty
He who favors an ignoble one with intimacy
Is like one who rears a lion for his own death.
Is like one who nurtured a lion to kill him

Sublimities have steep paths
Short of them, souls are at the collarbones.
Without them the soul roams confused

And many a man hoped in is surpassed by the one who hopes.
And many a hopeful was raised up by his hope

Fate may bring and issue forth
And moons wane, then grow full.
The moon waxes and wanes

Whoever races a fine horse on a donkey,
His hands reaped fruits of stumbling
His hands reap the fruit of stumbling.

Fates may come to one's aid with good fortune,
Joining the limited with the eternal
And bring the unlucky alongside the fortunate.

Not every archer aiming at a target hits it.

Say not that it has erred
Do not say that it has missed its mark.

All things have a measure with Him
And everything has its measure with Him.

Sorrow is in your hand whenever you wish;
Seize delight, leaving is toil
So seize a joy: to forsake it is hardship.

Not every moment grants what one loves;
If a crescent wanes then milk it
So if a milch camel yields milk, milk her.

Whoever seeks release is overtaken by sorrow,
In people's affairs there is grief for people
And people's trials offer people consolation.

Whoever meets generosity with ingratitude
Risks losing his blessing through neglect
Exposes his blessings to flight.

Affection has a binding covenant that must not be neglected,
Hope has a sanctity not to be ignored
And hope has a sanctity that must not be ignored.

The mantle of affection and love is woven.

The watcher prevents mutual accord,
As a quarrel though the judge may pardon
Like a litigant who may agree while the judge refuses.

How long shall I be lovestruck, my head flecked with gray?
I reckon death mistakes my name
I imagine that death mistakes my name.

Save yourself thereby before the chance is past
So save yourself through repentance before your turn ends.
