إذاif لمnot (past negation) أذُقْI taste غَيْرَother than هَجْرِabandonment الظِّباthe gazelles
إذا لم أذُقْ غَيْرَ هَجْرِ الظِّبا
فمِنthen from أينwhere أعرفُI know طَعْمَtaste الوِصالْthe union
فمِن أين أعرفُ طَعْمَ الوِصالْ
If I have tasted nothing but the gazelles’ abandonment,
If I have tasted nothing but abandonment by the gazelles,
how then can I know the taste of union?
