مضىdeparted الأُلَىthe predecessors برائِقِwith the clear part of اِلشِّعْرِpoetry وماand did not
مضى الأُلَى برائِقِ اِلشِّعْرِ وما
أبْقَواthey left لناfor us فيin كأْسِنَاour cup إلاَّexcept العَكِرْthe dregs
أبْقَوا لنا في كأْسِنَا إلاَّ العَكِرْ
Those before us departed with poetry's clear draught, and did not
leave us anything in our cup but the dregs.
تمتَّعُواthey enjoyed بحَشْوِwith the filling of لَوْزِينَجِهمْtheir almond pastries
تمتَّعُوا بحَشْوِ لَوْزِينَجِهمْ
وقدand indeed حُرِمْنَاwe were deprived نحنwe ourselves مِنof حَشْوِthe stuffing of الأُكَرْthe balls
وقد حُرِمْنَا نحن مِن حَشْوِ الأُكَرْ
They enjoyed the filling of their almond pastries,
yet we ourselves have been deprived of the stuffing of balls.
